Hi East Hawai’i tennis players!
The 2024 Adult 18 & Over League runs from April 20th (Sat) through June 30th (Sun). If you will captain a team, please email the following information to Diane Noda, Local League Coordinator (“LLC”), at di.noda@hotmail.com, by Monday, April 1st:
- Captain’s name
- Captain’s email and cell number
- Team name
- Flight (e.g., 3.0W, 3.0M)
The captains’ meeting, which will include scheduling of matches, will be via Zoom on April 4th (Thur) at 6:30 p.m. The Zoom link will be emailed to captains in early April.
If you are looking to join a team, please email your name, contact information, and NTRP rating to Diane Noda, LLC, at di.noda@hotmail.com, who will forward your information to that flight’s captains. A captain may contact you directly if that team is seeking additional players.

2024 Mixed 18 Registration Information
For anyone interested in making a team in the 18+ Mixed Doubles League, please email me with the division you are making a team in and also a team name if you have one. As previously, the Captain’s meeting will be held via Zoom. Therefore, please give me the email address we can send the Zoom invite to. I have not set a confirmed date yet, but will do so once all the teams are set (hopefully within the next 2 weeks). Like my last few seasons, Captain’s will be asked to email me their “wish list” of match dates and I will do my best to accommodate everyone.
The season will run from February 10 to April 7. Start emailing your team members to check which dates they cannot play so that you have a list of possible dates to discuss with other captains.

Interested in 70 & Over JUST FOR FUN League?
Are you interested in playing in a 70 & Over League? You just need to be 70 or older by December 31, 2023. This is a JUST FOR FUN League for East Hawaii Community Tennis Organization. We will see who is interested, and then decide on format (e.g. all men, all women, or mixed). Last year we did a 6.5 W division and a 7.0 Mixed. We usually form teams by drawing names out of a hat.
We'll run the league from October 7 to November 31.

Upcoming Ekolu League Timeline
The Ekolu League will run from August 12 - October 22, 2023, with sectionals in West Hawaii December 2-3, 2023. The captains' scheduling meeting will be held on Monday, July 17th at 7:00 P.M. via zoom. All captains must email their name, phone number, team name, and flight/level (6.0, 7.0, 8.0, or 9.0) to Marissa Hayashi at marissa.hayashi97@gmail.com by July 9, 2023.

Edith Kanakaole Multi-Purpose Stadium: Cash Handling Policy Changes
Due to a recent revision in our Department’s Cash Handling Policy, two changes in the tennis program at Edith Kanakaole Multi-Purpose Stadium’s indoor courts are now in effect. The first change has to do with the location of where tennis payments will be received. We will no longer be accepting tennis payments via depository at the Stadium. Tennis payments will only be accepted at the Recreation Division Office at 799 Piilani Street, next to the Stadium. Office hours are Monday through Friday from 8 am to 4 pm, closed for lunch from 12 pm to 1 pm. This transition to the Division Office will allow seamless payment transactions where payments are directly received and receipted by our staff. Acceptable forms of payment include credit card, personal check, or exact cash.
The second change is a requirement for full payment at the time of reservation. Individual players will continue to be able to make reservations for an upcoming or current month. Tennis clubs and organizations will continue to be able to secure reservations for the specific months they are written up for on our Hoolulu Complex Application & Rental Agreement forms. Reservations will no longer be accepted over the phone because of the full payment and receipt requirements of the Cash Handling Policy.
Writing in names in open spots on the schedule that is already posted at EKS and then later paying for the court's use is not allowed. All court reservations and payments must be done at the Recreation Division Office.
Reservations for June 2023 will open on Wednesday 5/17 at 6:30am at the Recreation Division Office. The current reservation limits of 2 total hours within each Monday-Friday period, 4 hrs on Saturdays, and 4 hrs on Sundays will continue to be in effect.
We apologize for any inconvenience these changes may bring. We hope you understand our need to follow best practices for receipt of payments. If you have any questions, please call me at 961-8720.

The starting day to sign up for indoor courts at EKS for the month of November has been changed from Monday, October 18 to Tuesday, October 19. The reason for this change is that P&R budget meetings are scheduled for Monday, October 18.

Edith Kanakaole Multi-Purpose Stadium opens up for tennis play!
The indoor courts at Edith Kanakaole Multi-Purpose Stadium will open up for tennis play on Tuesday July 13, 2021. For those desiring to make court reservations, the Recreation Division will begin accepting reservations for the month of July beginning Monday July 12, 2021.
Reservations may be made either in person at the Recreation Division Office or by phone at 961-8720, starting at 7:45 am. Phone reservations received prior to 7:45 am on the opening day of reservations will not be accepted. The indoor courts will be available from 8 am to 8 pm.

Big events happening in August!
Before arriving here as Director of Tennis, I shared my vision and idea about this event with various tennis groups on Oahu. I thought it would be a win-win-win opportunity for everyone involved!
Introducing the Royal Kona Resort Ekolu Team Challenge happening on August 20-22, during the Statehood Day weekend!
WIN – Club members get to experience competition from various teams across the state right in their back courts! This will also provide pre-season competition for all Ekolu teams statewide.
WIN – Tennis groups will have the opportunity to travel, play a lot of tennis, and enjoy the camaraderie with their team and others! It will be an opportunity to compete in a “Sectional-like” format without having to qualify through league play.
WIN – The Royal Kona Resort is offering special room rates for all participants and will benefit from the room bookings made during the event.
Here’s the scoop!
Competition will be limited to 5 teams per division – 7.0 and 8.0.
Team match format – Men’s Doubles, Women’s Doubles, and Mixed Doubles.
Round robin format – every team will play 4 matches.
Matches start as early as 9:30 on Friday (8/20), and end by 1:00 on Sunday (8/22).
Entry Fee - $20 per player.
Prizes for all participants.
If this sounds all good and you want to be a part of it, please let me know if you’re interested in entering a team.
Email me your division level, team name, and team roster by July 20th. Your team must have a minimum of 6 players (3 men and 3 women) registered to hold a spot in the event.
Additional players may be added to the roster and must register by August 7th.
Once I receive your roster, I’ll manually create your team on my end as players complete their registration.

Halai court rules allowing spectators at matches
Updated Halai court rules now allow spectators at matches in accordance with Hawaii County guidelines. We encourage spectators to socially distance, wear masks and continue safe COVID-19 practices.

The EKS outdoor courts will be closed Thursday, June 24 through Saturday, June 26 due to this year's Merrie Monarch Festival competition.

Ho'olulu Complex Court Use
We wanted to alert everyone that the Hilo Junior Tennis Club will be using two outdoor (non pickleball courts) at the Ho'olulu Complex every Sunday in June and July from 1-4pm for drills. Due to COVID restrictions, the club has been unable to use their regular drill courts at Waiakea High School and the indoor courts at EKS since last March 2020. This is on a trial basis and if successful may continue during the year. Thank you very much for your understanding.

UHH Men’s Tennis team capture NCAA Division II West Region Championships!
We are so proud of the UHH Men's Tennis team who captured the NCAA Division II West Region Championships!! They will go on to compete in the NCAA Division II National Men's Tennis Championships next week in Surprise, Arizona. They are ranked 5th (out of 8 teams) and will be playing 4th ranked Concordia from New York on May 18th at 11am (HST).

UH-Hilo Men's Tennis team clinches the PacWest Conference Championships!
Congratulations to the UH-Hilo Men's Tennis team who clinched the PacWest Conference Championships this past Saturday in Surprise, Arizona!! The team is coached by Kallen Mizuguchi and Vaclav Slezak. They will be returning to Surprise, Arizona to compete at the NCAA West Regional tournament May 7-8. The top four teams in the West Region will play off and only one team will move on to the NCAA National Championships.

UHH Vulcan Athletics Program Campaign To Raise Funds
The UHH Vulcan athletics program is starting a campaign to raise funds to help shortfalls in the budget created by the pandemic. You may have seen in the news that the UHH men's tennis team moved up to no. 15 in the country and the women's team is ranked 25th. HI, ADULT LEAGUE PLAYERS!
The Adult 18 & Over League will run from 4/10/21 to 6/27/21, with a modified format of ONE SINGLES and THREE DOUBLES per match. (However, please note that any sectionals/nationals will have the standard format of two singles and three doubles.).
If you will captain a team, please inform Diane Noda, Local League Coordinator, by March 15th at di.noda@hotmail.com or 808.936.2100. Please include your email, phone number, and team level. The virtual captains’ meeting will be held on Thursday, March 18th, at 6:30pm.
If you are interested in playing but do not have a team, please email your name and contact information to Diane Noda.

55 AND OVER LEAGUE IS STARTING!
For anyone interested in being a captain in the 55+ League and making a team, please email or text Lori or Sheri with the division you are making a team in and the team name, if you have one. The Captain’s meeting will be held via Zoom, a date and time will be announced to our list of captains. The season will run from March 6-May 9. Like the previous few leagues, Captains will be asked to email a “wish list” of match dates and we will do our best to accommodate everyone. Please be sure to ask your players early so that you can be prepared with your list of possible dates and discuss them with your opposing captains.

18+ MIXED LEAGUE IS STARTING!
For anyone interested in making a team in the 18+ Mixed Doubles League, please email me with the division you are making a team in and also a team name if you have one. As previously, the Captain’s meeting will be held via Zoom. Therefore, please give me the email address we can send the Zoom invite to. I have not set a confirmed date yet, but will do so within the next week. Like the last few leagues, Captain’s will be asked to email their “wish list” of match dates and I will do my best to accommodate everyone.
The season will run from February 13 to April 18. Start emailing your team members to check which dates they cannot play so that you have a list of possible dates to discuss with other captains. Dates will be given out on a first come first serve basis. The teams that email me first with dates will get first choice.
