Family Fun Doubles Tournament

The Family Fun Doubles Tournament on Oahu ignited our May is National Tennis Month activities and demonstrated that tennis is indeed the greatest family sport of all time!

Everyone was excited about the Return of the USTA Hawaii Family Fun Doubles Tournament. 24 parent/child teams (Mother/Father/Daughter/Son) participated in the May 2 event at the Central Oahu Regional Park Jarand M.Y. Iwase Tennis Complex. This annual event became a tradition back in 2010 and was on pause since 2020.

"It was so much fun playing with my daughter. I'm glad she let me play with her," remarked Tiffanie Matsutani. Her daughter, Kaitlyn, age 12, plays Junior Team Tennis and tournaments like most of the other kids in this event.

"Our family had an awesome time. Father and Daughter Doubles, where 'Mine' is the most common word and 'Sorry Dad' is the second." shared Reina Chang who cheered on her husband Mathew and daughter Hikianalia, age 12.

"Moments like these are precious," said Robert Lau who played with his 11 year old son Ethan.

"We're looking forward to the next one!

The entire Pablo family participated. Philip (Dad) paired up with Gavin (son, age 9) and Natassha (mom) teamed up with Sloane (daughter, age 12). "Tennis is truly our family sport. We're all playing in our respective league team matches during the weekend." said Natassha.  She and Sloane came outfitted in splashing red, white and blue outfits from head to toe and won the best dressed award.

The day concluded with the intermediate/advanced division showdown between the Chen Family (Erich & Cedric) and the Bode Family (Hendrik & Lana). The dads don't actively play but their stellar college tennis accomplishments from years ago became evident here and there. The Chen family emerged with the Intermediate/Advanced Division Champion Title.

"We achieved our goal, which was all about families bonding and having fun. Win or lose, it was a successful day. It doesn't matter if parents are advanced or novice tennis players, you can just see their joy and elation of being on the court as a team with each other. Very few sports allow you to play with your kids," remarked Madeleine Dreith, USTA Hawaii Community Tennis Director.
